Emergent Curriculum

Key Principles of Emergent Curriculum

Our image of the child guides all our decision-making.

Adults view children as competent, full of wonder, committed to relationships, willing to investigate, critique, reflect , and collaborate. This understanding of children shapes our decisions about how to arrange our classroom environment, schedule our days, and plan our curriculum

Teachers pay careful attention to the use of space and time.

We think of the classroom environment as a co-teacher, setting the tone for children’s days in the classroom and inviting them to explore, collaborate, reflect, and communicate with a range of media. Similarly, the schedule of each day allows for long stretches of open-ended time during which children can pursue their questions, passions, and developmental themes.
