Hilltop Educator Institute Presents:
Practicing Inclusion, Doing Justice: Dis/ability as an Equity Issue in Early Childhood Settings
Tuesday, November 7th, 2018
Facilitated by Dr. Maggie Beneke

Overview:

It is important to understand the relationship between inclusive education and equity. By equity we mean that outcomes are fair for each individual child rather than striving for outcomes that are the same for all children.

However, equity for young children means more than inclusion in the same programs that are attended by their peers. It may also mean embodying the values, policies, and practices that support the right of child and their family, regardless of ability, to participate in a broad range of activities and contexts.  Access, participation and support are defining features of inclusion in a high quality early childhood program and are vital for children's development, positive social relationships and sense of belonging.

In this interactive session, participants will explore challenges and rewards of viewing dis/ability as an equity issue in early childhood settings through an expansive view of inclusion. The presenter will draw on experiences as an inclusive classroom teacher, teacher educator, and early childhood special education researcher to provide both a framework and practical strategies for welcoming and serving all children, including children with dis/abilities. Participants will have opportunities for discussion and questions.
